Would you be willing to participate in a second (anonymous) survey about your sexual preferences?
Total Votes: 127
I want to begin by saying that this article started as a joke. I mentioned over on Myk's thread that I was conducting research for an article on 'Viner fetishes...and next thing you know I was getting emails, asking if I was really going to do it. So I figured, why not? We are all up in each other's business, anyway, I might as well go ahead and ask a bunch of people terribly personal questions and write up the results. Honestly, I figured I would get maybe a handful of responses. Enough to write something amusing, but probably not really meaningful.
Was I ever wrong.
Forty 'Viners agreed to answer a survey about their sexual inclinations. Unfortunately, as the results came rolling in, I became increasingly annoyed with my own survey. I had never expected to wind up with a useful amount of data, and now that my results exceeded my expectations, I found that I wanted to create something truly meaningful from all the information being so generously given me. This desire only increased when researching the sexual practices of non-'Viners...and finding that apparently few respectable examinations of sexual kink proclivity exist in our time (!!). But here I was, with the survey already sent out to many, and it was simply too late to change the questions. So I have attempted to compensate for the flaws in the original survey by asking questions of respondents who seemed unsure of an answer, prying a little deeper in an effort to at least keep the answers to these questions as accurate as possible. Despite the fact that the original questions left much to be desired, I feel that the results are accurate as far as they go, and really quite fascinating. If there is interest, I would like to take this even further, by conducting a more extensive, serious, and completely anonymous (these guys had to trust me -- thank you all so much) survey in the near future. But more about that later.
I also want to state that it is important to understand the distinctions between "paraphilias", "fetishes", and "kinks". Technically speaking, a "paraphilia" is a debilitating sexual obsession. That is, in order for a sexual preference to qualify as a paraphilia it has to really screw up your life in some way. While the list of various sexual preferences in my survey was taken whole-hog from Wikipedia's list of paraphilias, the phrasing of the questions in my survey did not attempt to uncover technical paraphilias. Instead, I used the list as a selective sampling of possible interests, and respondents answering "yes" to any of them were merely expressing an interest in the activity or item, rather than a pathological obsession. Also, it is important to note that technically, the term "fetish" can only be applied to a sexual activity which is strongly preferred or necessary in order to reach sexual fulfillment, which also is a bit beyond what I asked my respondents. The best term for what is covered here is probably "kink", a slang term implying that the respondent finds, in reality or in fantasy, that a particular act increases their sexual enjoyment.
As a final foreword, I want to state that while all of the participants are and shall remain anonymous, please bear in mind as you discuss this topic that every one of them is probably reading this thread. Many of them admitted to interests well outside what is considered culturally "acceptable", and it takes a lot of courage to do so. Some of the interests admitted to are illegal, many are considered immoral. This does not mean that those who have admitted interest in the more controversial kinks have, or ever intend to, act upon their desires. I encourage an open-minded, considerate discussion on this column, in which everyone can hopefully learn a lot and become a little more comfortable with their own sexuality. I will not, however, permit any insults or baiting on this thread. If you can't discuss a particular kink politely, please leave the discussion of that particular act to those who can.
What follows is the complete questionnaire sent to the participants in this project, along with a summation of the responses. Where appropriate, I have commented on the results, drawing comparisons with the results of other surveys where possible, or noting flaws I feel were present with this one.
1. Are you male or female?
male - 32 (80%)
female - 8 (20%)
Note: One of my participants has brought it to my attention that asking for a strict polarity on gender is unfair to many people. This is, of course, quite true, and stands as another flaw in my original survey.
I really wish there had been a more equal representation of females in the participants, but while female presence on Newsvine is growing, we still have many more men than women on the site. I suspect that despite the disparity in representation, the numbers here actually reflect the approximate percentages in the site, overall.
2. What is your current age?
18-25 - 5 (12.5%)
26-35 - 11 (27.5%)
36-45 - 16 (40%)
46-55 - 5 (12.5%)
56+ - 3 (7.5%)
Again, I could have wished for a more even distribution of ages in the participants, but I believe the sampling to be representative of the site as a whole.
3. How many sexual partners have you had in your life? (approximate, if necessary)
0-5 - 15%
6-20 - 37.5%
21-50 - 32.5%
51-100 - 5%
100+ - 7.5%
Here, we find our first significant difference with other modern surveys. In a Mosher, Chandra, & Jones survey in 2005, men aged 30-44 reported having an average of 6-8 sexual partners in their lifetime. Women aged 30-44 reported an average of 4. Pulling only from respondents to this study who fall into that age range, our average is 27 sexual partners so far. The average for all ages of 'Viners reporting is 42 partners thus far. Clearly, our desire to learn goes well beyond politics and literature.
4. Do you consider yourself straight, gay, bi-sexual, or other? How firmly attached do you feel to that definition of yourself?
Straight (firmly attached) - 57.5%
Straight (at least somewhat flexible) - 22.5%
Bi-sexual - 12.5%
Gay - 5%
In the same Mosher, Chandra, and Jones survey mentioned above, 90% of men and women considered themselves heterosexual, 1.8% of men and 2.8% of women considered themselves bi-sexual, and 2.3% of men and 1.3% of women considered themselves homosexual. Even combining the strongly heterosexual and somewhat flexibly heterosexual in our midst, we are significantly off the average. I did not list a "flexibility" rate for bi-sexual or homosexual respondents, as most respondents who answered that they were bi-sexual indicated a general flexibility about the concept, while those respondents who indicated that they were homosexual were very strongly attached to that definition of themselves.
5. How would you define your overall sexual nature? (yeah, be creative, go ahead)
This was one of my favourite sections of the survey, as it gave people a chance to talk, in their own words, about how they viewed themselves and sexuality in general. The general trends in response to this question were that a large majority of us consider ourselves to be adventurous and at least somewhat experimental in the sack. Many of us mentioned how very important sex is in our lives, something actively sought rather than just a great thing if it's available. Quite a few respondents mentioned that they look for intelligent, interesting partners, rather than physical beauty. Obviously, it would take up far too much space in this column to list all answers to this question, but here is a fairly representative sampling:
Adventurous, fun-seeking, thrill-seeking, for me it's not the destination-it's the ride!
Very uninhibited within reason, of course. But sex isn't the be all and end all of my existence and I've turned down a lot of women in my time for a variety of reasons even hot ones. Never have been particularly fond of the bar pick-up. I like to get to know a woman first.
The boring answer is to say that my nature is dominant. The more accurate answer is to say that I use sex like any other artistic medium. It's fascinating to be creative with sex, with touch, with sensation, with pain, with excitement. Private (or not-so-private) performance art. I love to figure out what makes my partner tick and slowly give it to her, or withhold it; to create a little erotic world where nothing exists but the intensity of the moment.
I have several unfulfilled fantasies. I'm probably too passive or not aggressive enough to really get what I want, but I enjoy sex as often as possible.
Insatiable... not in the I always want to have sex sense, but in the I always want to try something new sense.
6. Please answer "yes" or "no" to the following list of paraphilias, with "yes" indicating that you have enjoyed or think you would enjoy such an experience, and "no" indicating, well, that you wouldn't (and, ok, "I don't know" if you really have no idea, but please try to figure it out):
And this is where most of my irritation with my own methods applies. While many bizarre and interesting practices were listed, many of them really required shades of grey not present. Ideally, I think each fetish listed needs a range of attraction from which the respondent can choose, based on how enjoyable they find it. Also, many of the more common sexual practices such as light bondage or spanking were not listed, leaving the respondents to wonder if they had to try to squeeze into the category of "sadists" or "masochists" to cover a preference not really related to pain at all. Note: percents listed reflect the number of respondents answering "yes" to each item.
Do you have any other fetishes or 'philias not on the list? Please list.
This is list of fetishes offered up over the forty responses. Clearly, though the list sent out was painfully long, it was not nearly enough.
achluophilia - sexual attraction to darkness

7. Have you ever been sexually attracted to someone you met on the Internet? 75%
While not directly related to fetishes and kinks, I felt that examining our sexual interactions over this medium would be of interest to the Newsvine community.
8. Have you ever engaged in the equivalent of phone sex using chat or email with someone you met on the Internet? If not, do you think you ever would?
Have - 60%
Have not, but would -15%
9. Have you ever engaged in sexual activities on the Internet, using a game platform such as Second Life? If not, do you think you ever would?
Have - 17.5%
Have not, but possibly would - 20%
Most of the respondents who indicated that they "possibly would" indicated that really, they were just waiting for the technology to get better.
10. What is your idea of "safe sex"? This was another open question, designed to allow for a large variety of responses. There were many interpretations, but though most respondents did address the need for proper disease and pregnancy prevention, many went on to include the need for emotional care as well. Several people mentioned that there truly was no such thing as "safe" sex. Again, quoting all respondents would take up far too much space, but here is a representative sampling:
So...safe sex? For god's sake, know your partner. It's all hot to make out with somebody you barely know and all, and that's fine; if you're doing that, keep things high-school and don't exchange bodily fluids. You've got hands; use 'em. Just because you're an adult doesn't mean you have to have sex on the 'first date' or whatever. Get to know your partner -- find out if she gets tested and tell her whether or not you get tested (P.S.: GET TESTED REGULARLY, MORON). If you can't have an honest discussion with your partner about sex, then you probably shouldn't be having it. Bring your own condoms with you like a good Boy Scout....and use them.
No one gets hurt.
Assuring that both (all) partners avoid anything that would cause them physical or emotional harm.
Any sexual activity that does not spread disease or results in pregnancy. From that angle, anything goes as long as those conditions are met.
Making sure she can't run away.
11. How do you think you compare to the "average" person? Kinkier or less kinky? More sexually active or less?
A slight majority (52.5%) of respondents answered that they felt they were kinkier than the average person. A majority (57.5%) also responded that they thought they were more sexually active. Clearly we are not average folks, here, and as there are no reliable surveys to which I can compare this data, the mystery will have to remain a little longer.
It is important to consider, when looking at the results of this survey, respondent bias. That is, those who are willing to respond to a survey of this sort (particularly given that they knew I would be reading their answers with their names connected) are more likely to be fairly open about their sexuality, in general. I think the flaws inherent in the survey have by now been made pretty clear. Nevertheless, there are some provocative indicators which emerge when reading through the data. For one, it was interesting to see that a large number of sexual partners did not necessarily correlate to being particularly kinky. In many cases I found that those with the largest number of partners actually listed the least number of kinks, and vice versa. One possible theory to explain this is that perhaps those with fewer partners have longer relationships with those partners, allowing for a greater level of trust and therefore a broader exploration of sexual fantasies.
Looking through the results, I was surprised by the prevalence of some, and equally surprised by the lack of interest in others. For example, we hear about shoe fetishism all the time, and yet only 7.5% of the forty respondents answered "yes" to that one, as contrasted with the 12.5% who answered positively to arefetism (feet without shoes). The prevalence of amaurophilia and aquaphilia I expected, but I was surprised by the number of respondents who answered "yes" to heterochromophilia, a desire for those of a different skin color. Most respondents live in the United States, and all in "westernized" societies, where we are constantly reminded of racial tensions. And yet a solid half indicated that they were specifically attracted to those of other races. Are we, here at Newsvine, different than most of our culture? Are we attracted to those of other skin colors because of aesthetics, or because of a desire to overcome the tensions in our societies? The questions provide quite a lot of food for thought.
Other kinks on the list I expected to be slightly prevalent, but not to the extent to which they apparently are. Somnophilia and tight-lacing are in this category, as well as apodysophilia and erotic asphyxia. Perhaps much has to do with the age range of the large majority of the respondents: old enough to have had time to experiment, but young enough to have escaped some of the "moral" pressures older generations had to overcome.
In conclusion, while I think the results of this survey are well worth discussing (and I am really looking forward to discussing it with you all), I would like to try a part two if there is enough interest, with more careful questions allowing for more accurate results. Another bonus of a second round would be that I could set it up on a site where all respondents would be completely anonymous, and I would only see the results. Please respond to the poll above, so that I can gauge interest in this second survey.
I want to take a moment and thank everyone who participated in this survey. You trusted me with terribly personal information, and I am honored by that. Please rest assured that all emails have been deleted. If I could, I would send each and every one of you a dozen roses and a box of chocolates (nevermind how terribly unscientific of me that would be). As it is, I hope you enjoy reading the results of your effort!
Eproctophilia: sexual attraction to flatulence - 0%
Hehe. I have to go eat, I'll chew this whole thing over and get back to you later. Thanks again for doing this, C--what a great project. Clipped!
I was really disappointed on that one. I am a triple threat in that category - frequency, acoustical, and smell.
It seems like a good many of these overlap. I'd love to see more complicated breakdowns of this stuff. And, of course, count me in on the redux.
Olfactophilia: sexual stimulus with smells or odors - 42.5% Much like acousticophilia, I would have liked to see some specific examples offered, here.
Well, perfumes, obviously. But also natural body scents, like sweat. And maybe, for you foodplayers, the smell of your favourite vinaigrette. Or farts. Of course.
Thank you for doing this, Celestina. This was very cool, and I look forward to seeing where you go with the next version of it.
Great project. I can't wait for the 2nd iteration. Maybe I'll finally get off my ass & do my own survey that I've been promising for months.
Apodysophilia : desire to undress (see nudism) - 57.5% I am really surprised, given this percentage, that no Vinemeets have yet wound up with everyone naked...
That is because I have yet to get to one. ;)
As for the survey itself, very interesting (and varied) results. Some of the questions were a bit too vague, or open to interpretation, but overall it opened the gates for some interesting information I'd say. And a prize goes to whoever can figure out which paraphilia I was the only one to answer yes to...I noticed there were a few with only one person responding yes...I suspect due to the fairly small number of respondents (although it's not like 40 people is a very small number....but still).
Don't you dare say a word about the chinchilla thing!
So sorry for projecting myself all over your fantasy...
Never apologize for THAT....sheesh.... :P
ummm. Fecophilia and Emetophilia; has anyone seen the 2 girls 1 cup video? I will NOT post a link.... (that means its pretty BAD. use your imagination).
I was afraid of my imagination after I saw that video. The things people come up with.
While the video is pretty horrific the "reaction videos" on YouTube are hilarious - especially if you have been subjected to the original nastiness of 2G1C.
I had to go watch 'my little pony' and rewire my brain with months of Bob Ross to be unafraid AND to not throw rocks at any initially visually appealing blonde and brunette after 2g1c. It was ALMOST as bad as "tubgirl" and "GOATSE"... I vomited in my own mouth. twice.
its not simply fear... its far worse than that... its every childhood nightmare come to life in vibrant happy colors and sounds... like an LSD trip with clowns.. lots of clowns (I'm not fond of most clowns)
"WTF" becomes an understatement
Don't do it, it's just tub girl taken a step farther...
My best friend bought me dinner for watching it without closing my eyes or looking away.
Been called worse by better ;)
The temptation to watch it has been doing a vigorous battle with the part of me that knows better. So I wish you guys would shut up about it before the part of me that needs to experience anything that scares me takes over.
You KNOW you're going to be too curious to pass it up and be left out of the experience, however evil it is (and oh damn it is).....get it over with quick. Disgust with humanity is easier to deal with than regret :P
Or, you can save your mind from the pain....which is probably the better choice. Up to you :P
"Thy cup runnith over", I couldn't get past the part when she filled the cup, that's when I hit the close button. eeeeeeewwwwwwww. But ya, the clips of the reactions are funny.
I had to go watch 'my little pony' and rewire my brain with months of Bob Ross to be unafraid
I love Bob Ross. His hair alone makes me tremble with delight.
Definantly a brilliant essay, I wonder if they argued the grade?
The essay...hilarious. To delicately explain erotic consumptions nad otherwise oral exchange of fecal matter and the whimsical barter of regurgitations betwixt two vixens... then to analyze the musical backdrop in both formal and with almost an informational architect style of 'functional specification' write up I did me in... I don't know where my mind connected anything involving realtivly attractive women engaging in acts that turned my stomach into the likeness of a Mobius Strip and "funny" happned, but... it might go down anals , er, annals or personal history classified under "WTF+" or "YES RLY"
And Shawn...you may have been called worse, but never by better. Just so that's straight. ;)
okay, okay... damn...
I love Bob Ross. His hair alone makes me tremble with delight.
Ha, yes... indeed, his hair does have that effect on people. I woudl dare to say that the Bob "Happy Trees" Ross' hair has an effect akin to Chuck Norris' beard, though in comparison, Chuck would retract into his own beard at the thought of confronting the 'fro that Bob wielded with artistic glory. I've heard rumor that if Bob were still alive today, Burt Reynolds, David Hasselhoff, and Sean Connery, Brad Pitt and George Clooney couldn't collectively amount to the same level of sexyiess that Bob had.. all on account of the hair.
heheh.
yeah that video changed my life.
i was wondering what took so long for the comments to start...
that film review is priceless. obviously the professor had not seen the minute of fecalfelial frenzy; the notation in the margin is very interesting: "HUH? Not appropriate"...
well, that is true. it is not appropriate. But you know, it happens. @!$%# is fukt up (no pun intended?)
Bob Ross Hair Fetish - Afrophilia?
Bob Ross Hair Fetish - Afrophilia?
Sort of. There are several varieties of Afrophilia.
... to name a few.
And of course you have fringe sub sections of any group...
Oh man, I'm too aroused to type...
It's hard to type with one hand. :)
Rossonian Afrophilia Pryorian Afrophilia Royale Afrophilia
I can't believe I'm saying this, but it's a toss up between Bob and Don King....
If you're out there somewhere, I'm sorry, Bob. I didn't know I was attracted to Don King's hair, too, I swear. It just kind of happened.
It's hard to type with one hand. :)
unless its the type of hard you need only one hand.
Related to the 2g1c is 2g1f. I wonder what's next...
what is the 'f' ?
i am curious brown.
"Finger." I don't know what it's about, but after what happened with 2G1C, I'm certain I don't want to know.
you dont...
Be sure to include me in the follow-up, Celestina.
Taking the first survey really turned me on ;-)
Ditto:)
You are one hot researcher.
Seriously, thanks for all the hard work you did put in to follow through with this. Great job!
You are one hot researcher.
So true. In several ways.
Count me in.
Making sure she can't run away.
*Looks around....*
Ditto what they said. I'll do the next one too.
-Dave
I too will gladly participate in a second survey, unless you think my answers for the first one were too boring.
Great job, Celestina.
After having read over the results again and having had some time to digest them, I have to say that there are a number of them that I find difficult to believe. Since I don't intend to enter into a discussion that might lead someone to feel that I'm calling them a liar, I'll send you an e-mail with my thoughts on this. I will say that some of the results probably differ from other surveys because of the nature of the people drawn to Newsvine. Clearly, we are all the same in one important point, that being a desire to make a statement in a public forum, and to a certain extent, a willingness to argue that point well beyond its having been made. Also, after reading the comments, it occurred to me that at least a bit of hyperbole may have been generated just as an effect of having the opportunity to tell you about our proclivities; just a thought.
Note to self: Never ask lughshand on a date. Parkinson's law be damned, so what if our erotic fantasies expand to fill the void of our unsatisfied subconscious? Party pooper.
BTW - lughshand. Is that German for "Left Hand"?
Left Hand=Linke Hand
Sign me up Celestina !
Good stuff Celestina, very well done!
Oh, and I'm willing to do survey 2 as well.
Just a cursory glance at the results, I'll come back to it later. I enjoyed participating as well and sign me up for survey number two as well!
The missing bits are fascinating.....
Both of course.... Only two folks for thunder and lightening, I am stunned.
shocked even.
I freely confess that I was one of those two! Damn, thunderstorms are hot.
I freely confess that I was one of those two! Damn, thunderstorms are hot.
I almost answered positive to that, but I've not experienced it so I can't say I KNOW it is or is not (for me). The idea of it is nice, but lots of things I've experienced have nice ideas, not so nice outcomes...
Somnophilia and tight-lacing are in this category, as well as apodysophilia and erotic asphyxia.
I wasn't surprised that you found more of this than you originally thought you would. Current trends in pornographic material suggest that acceptance and practice is on the rise.
I would suppose that choking someone during intercourse carries with it a sensual trust. Older pornography, I used to notice that the "actors" would sometimes try and kiss the ladies but that at times the ladies would back off. They didn't make it overtly obvious and kissing is sort of a natural action during sex, but modern porn there seems to be less of the kissing and more of the choking. My point is that kissing as a show of trust and intimacy may have been set aside to choke the partner.
I've also noticed a rise in pregnancy porn and humiliation / mutilation porn.
And... no... I don't' regularly check on those kinds of porn, but curiosity gets piqued when you do a movie search for "300" and you end with movies instead that are titled "This is gang-baaaaaang"
There is definitely a trend, though, toward more and more violent porn. It's hard to say whether this is because of an increasing desire in our culture, or because it is more readily available (there aren't many men who would buy that material if they had to do it out in public, but it's different when you can browse in the privacy of your own home).
And still the "shock" factor. Boobs on TV back in the 50's wasn't common - married couples were depicted as sleeping in different beds. In 50 some years a porn with a man and a woman seem kind of bland and cable-ready... where as a man and a man and a goat and a woman... now THATS a train wreck.
I have a theory, which I have gone on and on about elsewhere, that you can measure the repressed needs and ideas of a society by what comes out in their pornography. If I'm right about that, then perhaps the violent porn is really just a reaction to the strengthening role of women in our society. Part of a transitional phase, hopefully.
Well... I'd think that porn would be one of two points - the start or the stop. On one hand it is the seedier part, the taboo that people go to which they're 'not supposed to' and therefore makes a good start, but then it takes a while to go mainstream, be seen and accepted as normal - no longer being taboo. If it were an end point then it feeds off of static / manual and traditional art, people like Milo Manara and Tinto Brass or Leone Frollo - merely putting action to thought explored by someone who operates in an imagined world of tangibilities.
Either way, I tend to agree that social progression in the areas of acceptance at some point contain porn. A prime example is interracial relationships. It seems to be the "it" thing in porn now...that and interracial inseminations.
also a more visceral rush to not dying.
Yeah I can see that - kind of like cliff jumping or doing anything potentially lethal / mortally harmful - but I'm not sure if those who enjoy the visceral rush of not dying do these things to feel the sudden distance FROM death, or the closeness TO death. Is it a journey to or a journey from? I suspect that in some cases it is a little of both, like a round-trip or a bungie cord kind of thing wherein a person rockets quickly toward one state and then snaps back a quickly away. Still, I wonder about the drive to such actions.
Awesome
PS I'd be more than willing to take part in a follow-up
Posted for a friend: "I can count the number of sexual partners I've had on one hand". Anonymous
or with one hand, as the case may be.
you know... doing that 'off handed' is much better. It's easier to pretend its someone else.
Ah, the date with Lefty!
Being ambidextrous truly comes in handy for me. :)
truly comes in handy for me
Bounty, the quicker picker uppper.
LOL
I don't count my experience in 'partners' I count it in 'rolls'.
That's a hell of a lot of information to sort through... bravo to you... I'm too lazy for that much work! ;)
Sign me up for round 2 too, I suppose.
Some of the interests admitted to are illegal, many are considered immoral.
I thought all of my revelations were immoral! I'll do better in round 2!
Just another talent of our Friend we didn't know about, conducting sex surveys! Coming soon to Sirius radio:
"This is Dr. Celestina. Tell me about your problems."
Thanks for doing this. I find it strange that there is such an enormous disparity between two different kinds of edgeplay (blood play and autoerotic asphyxiation). Also, I am glad there was a difference between algolagnia and masochism. It's good to make the distinction between pain and being humiliated, but as you state - different aspects of masochism should really have their own categories.
It would be interesting to throw the data in a database and see what correlations pop up.
You should consider using Survey Monkey for the next survey. You can export the results in csv, xls, and relational database formats. I've been using them for about 4 years for all sorts of surveys I have to do for work purposes. The basic service (10 questions & up to 100 responses) is free and the professional service is $19.95/month for unlimited questions & up to 1000 responses. You can pay annually and get unlimited questions & unlimited responses but I haven't had to go that far yet. Since I'm already paying for the professional service, I'd be happy to publish the next survey if you supply the questions. Just shoot me an email....
Asphyxiation, on the other hand, seems to offer more control and be less permanent.
Well asphyxiation also brings with it a different kind of rush. You can bleed and not panic, but cutting off air evokes a level of panic akin to what a claustrophobic feels in a coat closet. For the giver it may be about control, but for the recipient it may be more about that rush. Some people feel really good after doing something very dangerous and while they trust their partner to not kill them, the initial instinctual reaction is there - as you said - hard wired.
Personally, I can look at blood all day - my own or someone else's. It's not erotic or stirs arousal with me, but its not bothersome and unsettling either.
Asphyxiation is not about danger, for many. It's about physical sensation. It physically makes orgasms more intense.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erotic_asphyxiation
Erotic asphyxiation, asphyxiophilia, or breath control play, is the practice of intentionally reducing the amount of oxygen to the brain during sexual stimulation in order to heighten the received pleasure from orgasm.
Autoassassinophilia: sexual arousal from fantasizing about or staging one's own murder - 0%
I think I can see why you're not getting bigger responses from this subgroup, Celestina. Maybe they need to rethink the paraphilia to include "leaving a note."
Autoassassinophilia
I sort of envision someone being aroused by running someone over with a car or truck. I'm sure it's out there, but then some of the 'philias" seem to be niche market groups only. Me, I couldn't be aroused by something like running someone over. I detail my car twice a week and... the thought of possibly 'person juice' all over a brand new set of Pirellis induces wangular softitude.
Do they have a philia for obsessing over putting people under a Harley Rake? (and... deos a 'philia' have to be sexual?)
being aroused by running someone over with a car or truck
That'd be either k'monajuanachevroleia or oldsmobiliaphilia.

Thanks Celestina for a thoughtful and genuine piece of work. It's a stretch, but what I take from the results is that the sexual revolution of the 60s carried over to the children of that generation and into their adulthood. It appears the culture restrictions that were challenged when the majority of survey respondents were kids (36-45 - 16 (40%) and 46-55 - 5 (12.5%)), have been in some respects broken down. Culture limitations to race and the number of sexual partners don't seem to apply to the survey respondents. If I can use the survey respondents as a sampling of the general Newsvine membership, it appears we set our own limitations and do not let dated cultural doctrines dictate our choices.
Personally, I am not surprised at these results. Although we have many shortcomings and social issues to overcome, it's promising to see it appears many of us have gotten over this small hurdle. Thanks for all the effort you put into this.
PS: I am not advocating for interracial orgies, I just trying to say it is nice to see a conformation that race is no big deal to a lot of my fellow Viners. :)

Well, let me then. Interracial orgies for everyone!!!!! You know you wanna!
Brad,
LOL, hey I was trying to sum up some of the survey results in a tactful manner. :)
not to be totally lude and immature, but "its all [derivative color of white and red] on the inside" and "we're all black in the dark" come to mind.
Um, and I am all for interracial orgies.
LMAO, you know you are throwing open the flood gates. :) We love you too C. Now let's all hold hands and sing Kumbaya.
Hmmmm...might be interesting to see what newsvine groups(if any)that the respondents are in.
I'm guessing Sexvine. But I'm not sure.
I would wager that everyone in the comment thread is in the Sexvine group, but if they're not, they'll be joining in the next 15 minutes.
You might be surprised ;>)
.....The newsvine drunks.
I know that we're all over that survey.

I guess since you have found me normal I can ask, has anyone seen stolte-sawa barefoot? I have been looking for her.
Yes, lusting after stolte-sawa isnormalrequired
It's newsvine's international pass time.
-Dave
At least their is one critical thing that all nations can agree on.
Yes, lusting after stolte-sawa is normal...
Guess I'm normal then. But include yourself in that quote as well Celestina :)
Do fetishes always have to be sexual? Because I have this thing about Hang gliding that's nearly orgasmic. But other then that, I kind of have a pretty strong, almost irresistible, attraction to women who want to have sex with me. I don't know why, it just turns me on to no end. Usually I don't care about my own satisfaction, what's the most important to me is the women's pleasure, because if she is not enjoying it, then how can I? I guess I'm just weird that way.

Yeah... I understand. I dont think its weird, but I couldn't put it in a fashion that would fit right. Would it be called... 'enantioclimactaphelia' (opposite climax). Honestly i think it comes with more of having a fetish of acceptance. I know growing up I was or at least felt rejected often. Told that I wasnt good enough or whatever, and then in bed, its the perfect opportunity o disprove all theories on prowess... you either have it or you don't and when they 'get theirs' and you know that it was something you did or hard large part in, its equally satisfying on a sexually transitional level.
I'm have been more or less altruistic as well, I know it can be unhealthy, so i've been told, but that's where I'm at, I have no inadequacy hang-ups. not at all, it's not even an issue, in fact I'm very well,.. represented, so I've never had the need to strut or felt the need to prove my manhood. Some people say I'm very comfortable with myself and well adjusted because of this confidence, a very old soul, while some think I'm gay, which baffles me, but only on an intellectual level, never had a thought about it. I've been told it's because, I don't threaten, and I bounce when I walk. Personnel I think that I'm shy, and have been told I'm stuck-up, I like to entertain and make people laugh, because of my shyness (over compensate), and I've been asked if I've always been an exhibitionist. How you think you are and how others see you are seldom the same thing. Really I never bothered to think about it all that much. I mean what's the point. But not long ago I had a heart issue and it made me more introspective. After reading some of what you guys wrote here, I guess, like everyone else, I'm just another one of mother natures little freaks. It's a very comforting thought.
ha! Dan, that sounds less like a fetish and more like marketing.
while some think I'm gay
You know... that's the number one thing that people think when they first meet me in person. But... that gets tossed by their second observation: I'm an @!$%#.
Aside from that.. yeah... I know what you mean. I've had the same issues and labels. As for my manhood, I dunno. I haven't really asked about it, but I've never gotten complaints so... I'll let my ignorance on the subject of my comparative penis size keep me happy and my wife warm.
ha! Dan, that sounds less like a fetish and more like marketing.
See, no matter what you do someone will see it differently. I tried not to sound crass but I guess there is no better way to say it then to just come right out and say it. So to put it in plan english, eating pussy is my favorite thing do. But that's marketing too isn't it? What the f#$% can you do about it? How do you not sound like your advertising or boasting when you admit you're hung and like to go down on girls?. I tried, honest. I'm an Art Director and advertising designer it's how I think. But there's no easy way to say it. I'm not comfortable talking about this sh... Even there it sounds more like a resume then an explanation. And if you recall, just as when we first met, over a year ago.... (alas, Dan, is seen walking off into the sunset in defeat, his middle finger of his right hand solemnly raised in defiance...)

Skydiving used to be like that for me. Now I land and want to go fall asleep. On a side note, some women organism in free-fall, at least on the first jump, strapped to an instructor. I don't know about the guys. They've never mentioned that.
eating pussy is my favorite thing do
I'm the same way. Sometimes I'd much rather lick it than stick it. My wife seems to appreciate the attention though.
I kind of have a pretty strong, almost irresistible, attraction to women who want to have sex with me. I don't know why, it just turns me on to no end. Usually I don't care about my own satisfaction, what's the most important to me is the women's pleasure, because if she is not enjoying it, then how can I? I guess I'm just weird that way.
It's not at all weird. It's quite normal -- in fact, it's so normal that (think about it) it's considered an aberration to be turned on by someone who doesn't want to have sex with you. Sex with someone who isn't into it is bland; sex with someone who is into it, who deeply desires it and wants you badly, is incredibly hot. The more your partner wants you, the more she shows that she wants you and gets involved in the sexual play, the more erotic it's going to be for both parties.
And whether you view that as giving you a position of power (because this woman wants you so badly, and you can give her this fantastic sexual experience) or submission (because you seek only to please your partner)...or equality, because it doesn't always have to break down to those strict roles...it's still going to be way more exciting with the wholehearted arousal and desire of both partners.
One thing to remember, though: you get really turned on by a partner who shows that she really, really wants to have sex with you. There's a good chance that your partner probably feels the same way. It's best when both partners are showing how much they want the other, and it's not up to one person to make all the advances.
or hard large part in
That's what she said.
Dan you bring up an interesting point. When I ws in music school, we referred to "musical orgasms" - a rush of sensation as a reaction to a specific passage of music. Certainly, climax is a term used in music, so why not orgasms? "Porgy & Bess" is full of them. A favorite for me is in the final moments of Mahler's Symphony No. 1, where there is a mind bending change of key that ushers in the coda. Ooh, just had a shudder thinking about it ;)
Look up the song "When She Stares" by a Norwegian band called Span.
I have described it on more than one occasion as "orgasm rock".
-Dave
Great job, Celestina! Some fascinating statistics. I never knew there were so many different types of fetishes. How many are legal? ;)
For most of these I'd guess the State of Intoxication ;)
Tamakeri (Japanese term): sexual arousal from having a male kicked in the testicles by a woman - 0%
Not a surprising find.
I've seen several people online who ask specifically for just that - to get kicked in the nuts. I never understood it, but hey, whatever. And that's just in Austin.
Yeah well, the phrase is "Don't mess with Texas", not "Don't mess with Texans". Be that as it may, sometimes I feel as though merely showing up for work is the equivalent to asking for a swift kick in the ol' ball bag.
Damn, I wish I could have been here when you did this survey, it sounded a hell of a lot of fun. Are you considering doing another one in the near future?
Sweet! :D
Did I miss listophilia - arousal from lists? especially alphabetical ones (oooh, mama!)
I bet you've stayed up all night repeatedly hitting the sort button.
