Absolved Guantánamo detainees have nowhere to go

advertisement

Even though over 100 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay Detention Center have been declared "no longer enemy combatants" many of them cannot be sent home, due to fears of persecution in their native lands. The United States will not offer them asylum, and neither will most other western nations, partly due to the fact that having been incarcerated in Guantanamo, they are suspected of terrorist inclinations.

What do you do with a group of people whom you have wrongfully arrested, subjected to possible human rights abuses, and have nowhere to send once you are done? Apparently, you let them stay right where they are...

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I can not imagine your entire future being based on what country will take you. Finally only being taken by a poor country that really needs to curry favor with the US. I bet they have all been placed on no-fly lists. Just like we did to the canadian we accidentally sent to be tortured. Well i doubt they like US much anymore anyway.

I am sure they had a deep love for the U.S. prior to being captured.

What a thing to have happen. How does one try to fix this. If some politico wants to really get something under their belt that no one else has - they should figure out how to find a place for these people to go and live.
